Mondelēz International has announced that it will make all of its packaging recyclable by 2025, as the company aims to reduce waste levels and create a circular economy for packaging.

In order to ensure the company achieves this goal, Mondelēz says it will provide design guidelines to packaging developers, which will set priorities and identify materials to use or avoid across its packaging range.

The company also claimed that it would ensure that all paper-based packaging used by the company is sustainably sourced by 2020, and that it will provide recycling information to consumers all over the world by 2025 in order to increase global recycling rates.

Mondelēz estimates that this commitment will see the company eliminate 65 million kilograms of packaging material worldwide by 2020.

As part of thecommitment, the company claims it will support industry coalitions and public-private partnerships to develop waste-management infrastructure to reduce waste and improve real-world recycling rates.

Rob Hargrove, Mondelēz International’s executive vice-president of research, development, quality and innovation said: “As the global snacking leader, we’re committing to using sustainably-sourced materials and recyclable packaging as part of our active contribution to reduce packaging waste and establish a circular economy for packaging.”

Plastic waste and its impact on the planet is a broad, systemic issue that our consumers care deeply about, and which requires a holistic response.

“Together with partners from across the industry, as well as public and private entities, we can help to develop practical solutions that result in a positive environmental impact.”

Mondelēz’s announcement follows on from similar commitments made by food and beverage companies such as Nestlé, McDonald’s and Europe’s soft drinks industry, all of which aim to drastically reduce plastic waste levels by 2025.

Comparable commitments have been set by governments across the world. Last month, the Australian administration announced that it would aim to ensure that 100% of packaging in the country will be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

The European Union also announced its own plastic waste reduction strategy earlier this year, which will attempt to make all plastic packaging in the EU recyclable by 2030.
